Wind tunnel testing facility - A success story of Volkswagen
Eleven Alfa Laval heat exchangers are in use, contributing to the achievement of that goal.
The Volkswagen wind tunnel testing facility in Wolfsburg, Germany, is the largest wind tunnel in Europe. The facility is equipped with 11 Alfa Laval heat exchangers, of which 4 are cooling units, 3 are heating units, 2 are for free cooling (cooling without using cooling equipment), and 2 are used for two cooling devices. These heat exchangers, installed in 2008, have made it possible to change temperatures quickly. The key to the facility's cooling system is free cooling, which utilizes outside air for cooling without using cooling equipment. Thanks to Alfa Laval's heat exchangers, free cooling is effective when there is a sufficient temperature difference between the outside air and the refrigerant being cooled. The additional heat exchangers installed for free cooling have significantly reduced operating costs, saving both electricity and clothing.
